About

Hey there. My name’s Dan Staines. I’m a games scholar and erstwhile game critic currently living in Sydney, Australia.

My areas of interest and expertise include serious games, moral psychology and development, meta-game reward systems, and immersive sims. But really, I’m interested in and knowledgeable about almost every aspect of video game design, development, and culture. I’ve been studying and writing about games for more than 25 years now.

My academic work has appeared in outlets including Games and Culture, the Journal of Gaming and Virtual Worlds, ICA, and Ethics and Information Technology. As for my journalism, most of it appeared in Australian magazines like Hyper, PC Powerplay, and Official PlayStation Magazine, as well as online outlets like Kotaku, IGN, GameSpy. I also edited a popular (and now sadly defunct) gaming blog named Eegra, as well as GBA World, PlayStation World, and Total Gamer magazines.

Anyway, thanks for visiting! You are a cool person and I hope you have an excellent day.

— Dan
